The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff Station is hosting a “safe and secure collection event” for Santa Clarita residents to safely dispose of sensitive items including documents, expired credit/ATM cards and electronic devices. According to a post on the SCV Sheriff Station Facebook Page:
“The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station is hosting a free “Safe and Secure Collection Event” on Saturday, May 12, 2018, from 7:00 am to 12:00 pm* for the residents we serve. The event will be held at the Westfield Valencia Town Center Mall parking lot on the corner of Citrus Street and Magic Mountain Parkway. Please note that our event will be ending at 12 p.m. To ensure that we can accommodate the disposal of your items, we recommend that you arrive no later than 11 a.m.
Documents are limited to five (5) boxes (11” x 12” x 15”) per vehicle, where all types of paper, empty binders, expired credit cards, or computer disks will be accepted for shredding. Please remove any papers from 3-ring binders prior to drop-off.
Additionally, you can bring any electronic device, including hard drives, monitors, or anything else that plugs into a standard home outlet for recycling. A maximum of five (5) electronic items will be accepted per vehicle. Sorry, but large appliances, engines, batteries, battery-operated toys, industrial servers, or household hazardous waste will not be accepted.”
Events like this are held sporadically by the SCV Sheriff Station deputies to help residents rid themselves of sensitive documents and other things that may contain information that could be used by identity thieves. Identity theft is one of the most common crimes in the US, and encompasses everything from posing as someone else online to draining bank accounts and credit card fraud. One of the best ways for the public to defend themselves against identity theft is to make sure that any and all sensitive documents are properly disposed of.
