Deputies working out of the Santa Clarita Sheriff Station patrol all over the Santa Clarita Valley, including unincorporated areas and Sleepy Valley. Immediately after arrest, suspects will be brought to the station where they will undergo booking and processing. The procedure includes taking the arrestee’s photograph, recording their fingerprints and conducting a comprehensive national background check. The entire process can take anywhere from 45-minutes to several hours; it all depends on how busy the Santa Clarita Sheriff Station is at the time of arrest. Regardless of how long it takes, arrestees it will not be possible to bail someone out until booking and processing has been completed.
The on-site jail in Santa Clarita is very small, with room for only about 40 inmates at a time. If it becomes overcrowded, or if inmates remain at the jail for longer than 72-hours, deputies will begin to transfer inmates to much larger jails in downtown Los Angeles. Men are transferred to Twin Towers and women to the Lynwood Jail. Upon transfer, inmates will need to go through another round of processing at the new location which can take up to 24-hours to complete, and inmates will be ineligible for bail until the process is complete. When the bail bond process has begun while the inmate is still located at the Santa Clarita Sheriff Station jail, transfer can often be avoided altogether.
