Those who are arrested on or around Copper Hill are taken to the Santa Clarita Sheriff Station to undergo booking and processing. The Santa Clarita Sheriff Station is staffed by over 200 sworn-deputies and over 40 civilian staff.
Arrest and Booking Process
Once an inmate arrives at the Santa Clarita Sheriff Station, they will await their turn to undergo booking and processing. This procedure can take anywhere from 45-minutes to 6-hours, depending on how busy the jail is, and once it is complete bail will be set and it will be possible to obtain an inmate’s release via bail bond.
Inmates will remain at the Santa Clarita Sheriff Station jail for up to 72-hours, or until the jail becomes overcrowded. Once either of these happens, inmates will begin to be transferred out to one of the larger, long-term holding facilities. Men are taken to Twin Towers and women are transferred to the Lynwood Jail.
Being transferred can easily add an additional 12 to 24-hours to an inmate’s time in custody as they must go through another booking and processing procedure, this time at a much larger, much busier jail. When the bail bond process is begun while an inmate is still located at the Santa Clarita Sheriff Station, it is possible to avoid the transfer process altogether and get your friend or loved one released faster.
Options for Release
A bail bond isn’t the only option that an inmate has for release. Depending on what they were arrested for, an individual may be eligible for several different options for release, however, a bail bond is by far the fastest and least expensive:
- Cash Bonds – This is done during court business hours, and is the most expensive way to get someone out of jail. Once bail has been set, a person can pay the full amount to the court clerk to get someone out of jail. If the defendant shows up for court, the full amount of bail is refunded to the person who paid it (minus any relevant fees). If they do not show up, the full amount of bail is forfeited to the court.
- Property Bonds – A piece of property is put up in lieu of bail money. The person who puts up the property must own equity in it totaling at least 150% of the total bail amount for the property to qualify. The courts are very thorough in the qualifying and appraisal process, and property bonds can take weeks to go through before an inmate is released.
- Own Recognizance – An inmate may be released on their own recognizance, provided that they give the court a written agreement to return for all of their scheduled court dates. O.R. is not granted to every defendant.
- Citation Release – Citation release is generally reserved for minor infractions, and are similar to being released via own recognizance, but do not require a written promise to return to court.
