Recently, a woman was stopped under suspicion of drunk driving in Newhall. The woman was pulled over on a dead-end street, but when deputies approached the vehicle, the woman quickly took off, turned around, and escaped after damaging two squad cars.
The suspect took off toward another wash near 16th street, though the chase was cut short when her car stalled out on a service road. The woman was immediately arrested after the chase, and neither the suspect nor any deputies were injured.
The woman was arrested and held on suspicion of drunk driving, though the investigation into the incident is still ongoing. Once it finishes, the suspect may also be charged with evading an officer.
Evading an officer – California Vehicle Code 2800.1 is usually charged when an individual willfully flees a police officer while driving a motor vehicle. 2800.1 VC is a misdemeanor, and includes the penalties of summary probation, up to 1-year in county jail, a fine of up to $1,000 and/or impounding of the vehicle for 30-days. Also, those who are convicted of violating 22800.1 VC face having their driver’s license suspended or revoked.
It’s lucky for the suspect, drunk or not, that no police officers or bystanders were injured during the chase. If any of these events had occurred, she would be facing much harsher charges.
