New Year’s is a wonderful time for us to reflect on our past accomplishments (or lack thereof) over the past year, and look forward to new and exciting opportunities in the year to come. Of course, holidays are not without their own set of hazards. Below are a few tips for those celebrating New Year’s Eve to help keep yourself and your family safe.
If You Are Going Out
- Plan your outing ahead of time. Know where you’re going, when you’re going to be there, and make sure someone else knows where you plan to be, too. If you’re driving and plan to consume alcohol, make sure to schedule a ride either via a ride share app, a taxi, or a friendly designated driver.
- Only bring what you need with you. Crowded spaces with inebriated people are an excellent playground for thieves and pickpockets.
- Should you drive yourself, make sure to park in well-lit, visible areas. When walking or parking, avoid dark alleys, parking lots, or dilapidated areas.
If You’re Hosting
- Test all of your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they work. If any of them do not, replace the battery or the unit immediately.
- Provide non-alcoholic drink options for designated drivers and others who may not want to consume alcohol.
- Provide guests who have drunk too much a place to sleep for the night. Don’t let anyone get behind the wheel while intoxicated.
- Be mindful of your pets. New Year’s celebrations are often accompanied by loud noises, whether gun shots, firecrackers, or something else, and can cause a lot of fear and anxiety in your pets. As can having a house full of people they are unfamiliar with. If your pets seem like they are getting stressed out, create a safe, quiet place away from the people and noise where they can rest and calm down.
